Council discusses appointment vs. special election

The North Sioux City City Council meeting opened May 6 with the reconvening of the old council with a few agenda items to finish before the recently elected new council members took their positions. Before the council approved the agenda, council member Greg Meyer moved that the appointment of the vacant alderman Ward 3 position be moved to the new council’s agenda. The position was left open by the untimely passing of then council member Doug Berg.

Property owners given 30 days to clean

A public hearing on a nuisance violation for property located at 31798 475th Ave., Elk Point was held at the Union County Commission meeting on April 30 at 11:15 a.m. The property belonging to Richard and Wanda Jilderda was declared a nuisance at their prior meeting because of garbage, trash, trees and branches and inoperative, wrecked motor vehicles and campers sitting upon the property.

Best and Brightest students honored

Governor Kristi Noem’s office, Lieutenant Governor Larry Rhoden and the Associated School Boards of South Dakota (ASBSD) honored students who were identified as the top one percent of their senior class, from the state’s Public, Private and Tribal/BIE schools on Monday, April 29.

The South Dakota Newsmedia Association held its annual Awards Conference in Huron April 26. The Dakota Dunes/ North Sioux City Times had two 1st place finishes from reporter/photographer Kelly Riibe.

House fire leaves 3 dead

Three residents were found deceased after a fire Saturday morning, May 4. The North Sioux City Fire Department responded to 7 Bancroft Court around 7 a.m.
